Tuscany in Winter: San Quirico d’Orcia
This year we tried to visit small Tuscan towns that we haven’t been to before. So without much to do on 24th of December, the choice fell on San Quirico d’Orcia. It’s the closest town to the famous Cappella di Vitaleta, one of the most photographed locations in Tuscany.
San Quirico d’Orcia is on the Montepulciano – Pienza – Montalcino route. Pienza is that town where some scenes of Master of None (season 2) were shot.
San Quirico d’Orcia is a comune (municipality) of about 2,500 inhabitants in the Province of Siena in the Italian region Tuscany, located about 80 kilometres (50 mi) southeast of Florence and about 35 kilometres (22 mi) southeast of Siena inside the Valdorcia landscape. It is named in honor of Saint Quiricus.
On this trip I decided to mostly use my Canon EF 70-200 mm 2,8 L IS II lens (instead of the usual 24-70), that’s why there are more close-ups and details than usual.
We had our lunch at Trattoria Osenna, which was surprisingly packed with people. I loved the “Our food is freshly cooked, so you’ll have to wait for it” note in the menus, made us relax a little bit.
All in all, we spent a little under 3 hours here, as we had to drive back to Cappella di Vitaleta for those sunset photos from the street. Those will be in my next post :)

Great photographs – well done. In the true midst of winter the sun still shines for you.
Anyone reading this post should also consider eating at Taverna Ciacco. I had one of the best aged Chianina steaks I have ever had at this restaurant just one month ago
Wonderful photos! I think that the huge disk is for burning wood in order to offer a small warm place for visitors walking in the streets. Next time come and visit Castiglione d’Orcia: a wonderful medieval town on the top of the hill in front of Bagno Vignoni. We wait for you! Greetings! Mimosa
