I Measured 32 Hotel Websites in Münster

Münster’s best-reviewed hotel on Google has a booking button that doesn’t work. That gap, and dozens more like it, is exactly what this audit exists to find.

Münster sits about an hour north of my home base in Dortmund. Officially it’s an independent city (Kreisfreie Stadt) and the historic capital of the Westphalia region, home to roughly 300,000 people, with close to 60,000 of them students. That mix shows: the city carries centuries of history (this is where the Anabaptists staged their rebellion during the Reformation, and where the Peace of Westphalia was signed alongside Osnabrück in 1648, ending the Thirty Years’ War) while still feeling young and busy day to day.

It’s also officially Germany’s bicycle capital, and back in 2004 it won the LivCom Award for the world’s most livable city in its population category. Add a beautifully restored old town around the Prinzipalmarkt, and you get a steady flow of students, business travellers, and weekend visitors, which makes it a solid test case for how a city’s hotel websites hold up under mixed demand.

Before the numbers: here’s how I select and measure these hotels, and here’s the glossary if any term needs unpacking. I measured everything below on July 1, 2026.

Key findings

  • Münster’s highest-rated hotel on Google, MARRAM Suitehotel at 4.9, has a booking widget that doesn’t actually work. A strong reputation doesn’t always match a technically solid website.
  • 30 of 32 hotels (94%) have a real booking engine wired into their site, not just a contact form. For a city this size, that’s a genuinely strong number.
  • Mobile speed is where things get soft: the average PageSpeed mobile score is just 64, and only 2 hotels break into “good” territory (90 or above).
  • 14 of 32 websites carry no structured data at all, by far the cheapest and clearest technical gap left to close in this city.
  • Photography is a bright spot: 4 hotels earned my top “very good” grade, and only one fell into “bad.”

How Münster hotels are rated

Before I get into the technical side, here’s where the reputations stand across the three platforms guests actually check. Booking.com uses a 10-point scale while Google and Tripadvisor use a 5-point scale, so don’t read the Booking numbers as directly comparable to the other two.

  • Google: mean 4.39, range 3.9 to 4.9, total reviews 20,058
  • Tripadvisor: mean 4.01, range 3.2 to 5.0, total reviews 3,897
  • Booking.com: mean 8.25, range 7.3 to 9.0, total reviews 39,018

Nobody in this city is struggling on reputation. Every hotel here clears a respectable bar on all three platforms, which is exactly why the website side matters so much: a good reputation gets someone to your site, but only a good website turns that visit into a booking.

The platforms

WordPress runs the show in Münster, same as everywhere else I’ve measured so far. Here’s the full breakdown across all 32 qualifying hotel websites:

  1. WordPress: 14 hotels (43.8%)
  2. Undetected: 6 hotels (18.8%)
  3. Joomla: 4 hotels (12.5%)
  4. Typo3: 3 hotels (9.4%)
  5. Contao: 2 hotels (6.2%)
  6. Wix: 1 hotel (3.1%)
  7. SiteMinder Website Builder: 1 hotel (3.1%)
  8. Strato Website Builder: 1 hotel (3.1%)

“Undetected” means I couldn’t identify the platform from the outside, not that there isn’t one. Full definitions are in the glossary.

Performance and Core Web Vitals

Mobile is the number that matters most, since that’s where most future guests land first. Average PageSpeed mobile score across the 32 sites: 64 (median 63). The split: 2 hotels scored 90 or above (good), 26 hotels landed in the 50 to 89 range (needs work), and 4 hotels scored under 50 (poor).

Desktop scores are noticeably healthier, averaging 82 (median 81.5), with 10 hotels hitting good, 21 in the needs-work range, and just 1 poor. That gap between mobile and desktop is common, but it’s still the gap that tends to cost bookings, since most hotel bookings today start on a phone.

For Core Web Vitals specifically: Pass 12 hotels, Fail 7 hotels, and No data 13 hotels. “No data” isn’t a failing grade, it means Google hasn’t recorded enough real visitor traffic yet to score the site, which is common for smaller, independent hotels.

Booking systems

30 of 32 hotels (94%) have an actual booking engine on their website, not just a contact form. That’s the strongest result I’ve measured in this series so far, and it’s worth celebrating: it means most Münster hotels are set up to take direct bookings without a phone call or an email back and forth.

Here’s how the working engines break down by vendor:

  • DIRS21: 6
  • SiteMinder: 3
  • Viato: 3
  • MEWS: 3
  • HotelNetSolutions: 2
  • SoftTec: 2
  • QR Hotels: 2
  • HotelPartner: 1
  • Gastrodat: 1
  • CultBooking: 1
  • Hotel-Spider: 1
  • Synxis: 1
  • Busy Rooms: 1
  • Hotelfinder: 1
  • Eviivo: 1
  • Unbranded/generic engine: 1

Photography

This is my own trade, so this section carries my professional opinion more than a raw score. It judges how the photos are actually used, not just how good they are (full grading criteria are in my methodology).

  • Very good: 4
  • Good: 19
  • Normal: 8
  • Bad: 1

Four hotels earned my top grade: Parkhotel Hohenfeld, Hotel Mauritzhof, Hotel International am Theater, and Hotel Schloss Wilkinghege. What stood out across all four is that they don’t just have nice photos, they show every room type, let you enlarge images, and build proper galleries instead of one thumbnail per room. That’s the difference that actually helps a guest decide.

If you’re curious what makes photography work as hard as it should on a hotel website, that’s one of my activities.

Who does it best

These are my personal picks, not a leaderboard generated from the data. Four hotels stood out enough that I wanted to call them out by name.

Hotel Mauritzhof, Münster

Hotel Mauritzhof is my top pick. The photography is genuinely high quality, and the animations throughout the site are smooth without feeling gimmicky. It’s the kind of site that makes me want to book a room just from browsing it.

Hotel International Am Theater in Münster

Hotel International am Theater has a logo that gives a strongly retro first impression, but don’t let that fool you: the site itself is very well planned. Room pages carry everything a guest actually needs to decide. My one note would be the footer, where the color contrast could use a bit more work.

Hotel & Restaurant Schloss Wilkinghege, Münster

Hotel Schloss Wilkinghege is the only hotel in Münster with a fully built-out schema setup, my “Good” grade rather than “Limited” or “None,” even if there are still a few gaps to close. Combine that with very good photography and a mobile site that actually passes Core Web Vitals, and this is one of the more complete technical packages I measured in the city.

Hotel Brintrup, Münster

Hotel Brintrup packs in a genuinely useful amount of information, room details, amenities, the works. My one suggestion: the brand color is used for absolutely everything, the header, the headings, the links, and the call-to-action buttons. When one color does every job, the buttons that are supposed to grab attention end up blending into the background instead.

Two opportunities worth flagging

These aren’t the two “worst” websites in Münster, they’re just the two where I can point at something specific and say: here’s exactly what I’d fix first.

Romantik Hotel Hof zur Linde has the ratings to match a top hotel, and mostly the website to match too, apart from one recurring issue: the room photo galleries have no navigation controls and no way to enlarge an image, so you’re stuck waiting for photos to slide past on their own. I’d also rethink the pink used throughout as the accent, call-to-action, and heading color. It’s a bold choice, but it reads a bit more DIY than the rest of the site deserves.

MARRAM Suitehotel is genuinely the best-reviewed hotel in this entire audit on Google, and among the best-reviewed on Booking too. The website doesn’t match that reputation yet: the room availability widget doesn’t currently work, and the footer still carries a 2022 copyright notice. Both are quick technical fixes, and given how strong the underlying reputation already is, this is probably the single highest-return fix in the whole dataset.

The full list, hotel by hotel

The number next to each hotel is just its position by Google rating, nothing more (a strong Google rating and a strong website don’t always go together, as you just saw). Stars are the official class where one exists; booking shows the actual system in place, or “Form” where that’s what’s used instead. Full definitions for any of these terms are in the glossary.

The one fix for Münster

If I had to point every hotel in this city toward a single change, it would be mobile speed. An average PageSpeed mobile score of 64, with only 2 hotels making it into “good” territory, means most guests browsing on a phone (and industry-wide, that’s somewhere around 40 to 50% of all hotel bookings) are waiting longer than they should for a page to load, a photo to appear, or a booking widget to respond. Every extra second there is a chance for someone to bounce back to Google and click a competitor instead.

The good news: this is one of the more fixable problems in web development. Image optimization, better hosting, and trimming unnecessary scripts usually get you most of the way there.

If you want a second pair of eyes on your own site’s speed (or your photos, or anything else in this audit), reach out, I’m happy to take a look.
