4 WordPress Theme Niches to Look for in 2012
With over 40 [popular] premium WordPress theme developers on the market, there are thousands of WordPress themes to choose from, not considering all the free themes (which usually are of poor quality).
However, even if there are many brilliant designs and concepts out there, I find that some niches have remained unexplored by the “premium” developers in 2011. We (WPZOOM) have also mostly ignored them in 2010-2011.
1. Food & Drinks / Recipes
There are probably around 10 good themes that are really suitable for this category, though some of them comfortably fall under the more general “business” category.
I can probably say that each of the major theme developers have just one theme of this kind, but it seems that the sales figures haven’t convinced them to pay more attention to this.
2. Pets & Animals
A couple of weeks ago I was thinking about creating a portfolio-type theme for pet owners. Some sort of diary for your pet, where you could create a time-line (not like on Facebook) for your pet, with videos when it was little, growing up, first scratches, etc.
3. Sports & Activities
Usually most sports-oriented websites are using a magazine-style WordPress theme. Even though I never ran or owned a sports-website, I am sure that there are many out there that would love some unique features. Maybe a football (soccer for you Americans) theme using custom post types for players, clubs, coaches, etc. I will think about creating such a theme myself.
4. Vacation / Travel
There aren’t many themes for the travel industry. Just a couple here and there, but nothing fancy, nothing really unique and mind-blowing. I already have one WordPress theme of this kind (Voyage), but I can do better, I’m sure of it. As I have worked in the travel industry for a few years, I am curious about exploring this niche better.
Have your say
Do you know of a niche that could use more themes? Is there something specific that you are expecting from premium theme developers in 2012?
